BIRNS Class A High-Voltage Electro-optical Hybrid Connector
|
BIRNS has developed a Class A Hybrid high voltage electro-optical connector, as part of its highly successful BIRNS Millennium Series 3T size. This configuration has two multimode optical fibers, eight 2.5Kv conductors, and four 600v conductors; other configurations are available.
The BIRNS Hybrid connector is timely because of today’s ever-increasing demand for high-quality signal bandwidth. It differs from other electro-optical connectors presently available because it can carry high voltages (e.g. to power the sensor package). Thus, a single connector can provide high-voltage power to the device, and also carry sensor signals back. This product can be used by any user of underwater electro-optical cabling, especially those with high-voltage (< 3Kv) requirements. These users will benefit from high data rates-- and the reduction in cost and system complexity which results from using a single cable/connector. “This connector represents an important advance”, says Eric Birns, Company President. “Other optical connectors either can't carry electrical power, can't handle high voltages, or don't withstand open-face pressure. But now, users with challenging data-stream requirements can get a high-performance underwater connector which meets all of their needs.” BIRNS Hybrid connectors are presently available in the 3T size of BIRNS' Millennium Connector series, but plans are underway to expand the range of available sizes. BIRNS Hybrid connectors are Class A rated to 2,000M, i.e. withstand open-face pressure to 200 bar. Founded in 1954, BIRNS, Inc. of Oxnard, CA, is a leading manufacturer of high-performance lighting and connector systems for deep-ocean and nuclear use. In addition to lights, BIRNS manufactures connectors in six different ranges, including Aquamate wet-mateables and Millennium high-density deep-submergence styles. |
