BIRNS Class A Coaxial Connector
Press Release - 15 Oct 01

BIRNS has developed a Class A coaxial connector, suitable for GPS-frequency signals, as part of its highly successful BIRNS Millennium Connector range. This connector transmits high-frequency data streams in a coaxial format, with minimal signal noise or attenuation. Importantly, BIRNS precludes any discontinuous impedance changes in the ‘transition zone’ between the cable and the coaxial insert– which otherwise would cause signal attenuation at high frequencies.

The BIRNS Coaxial connector is timely because of today’s ever-increasing demand for high-quality signal bandwidth. It differs from other coax connectors presently available because it uses a high-quality polyethylene dielectric, yet nonetheless withstands open-face pressure. The BIRNS Coaxial connector features a removable, replaceable connector insert, and its polyethylene dielectric provides superior signal characteristics.

This product can be used by any user of underwater coaxial cabling, especially those with high-frequency (>1 GHz) requirements. These users will benefit from the higher data rates and superior signal-to-noise ratio available with the BIRNS Coaxial connector. For example, users transmitting signals digitally via satellite through BIRNS connectors will find reduced system signal attenuation.

“This connector represents an important advance”, says Eric Birns, Company President. “Other coaxial connectors either use GRE or some other ‘lossy’ material for the dielectric, or do not withstand open-face pressure, or transition from the cable in a discontinuous manner. But now, GPS-frequency users with challenging data-stream requirements can get a high-performance underwater connector which meets all of their needs.”

BIRNS Coaxial connectors are presently available in the 3P size of BIRNS' Millennium Connector series, but plans are underway to expand the range of available sizes. BIRNS Coaxial connectors are "Class A - 2,000M" rated, i.e. withstand open-face pressure to 200 bar, and are suitable for use with frequencies of up to DC 1.8 GHz.

Founded in 1954, BIRNS, Inc. of Oxnard, CA, is a leading manufacturer of high-performance lighting and connector systems for deep-ocean and nuclear use. In addition to lights, BIRNS manufactures connectors in six different ranges, including Aquamate wet-mateables and Millennium high-density deep-submergence styles.
