General Information Sheet
BIRNS SOR: Lightweight Deep Sea Light

General Information

The BIRNS SOR is a durable and lightweight open-reflector general-purpose underwater light. Proven by experience, the SOR was developed in 1981 and, apart from periodic upgrades, remains essentially unchanged from the original style.

Applications

The SOR is widely used on ROV's. It can be supplied with your choice of 120 or 240 volt tungsten-halogen lamps, in range from 100 to 500-watts. It's an excellent light for close-up illumination for color or black and white filming and videotaping.

Features/Benefits

The BIRNS SOR provides:

a) wide, even illumination
b) small size
c) rugged construction
d) 120 or 240 volt use

SOR-II models also may be relamped in 30 seconds, without the use of tools!
All SOR lamps operate well on AC or DC.

What You'll Need

To operate the BIRNS SOR, you'll need the following items:

a) The SOR light itself (which includes your choice of lamp)
b) The Power Cable Assembly
c) A mounting bracket is not actually necessary for operation but is usually helpful.

The Power Cable Assembly is available in unbroken lengths up to 1,000 feet. We make the cables to your order, so you can get any cable length that you wish. Special configurations and/or cable jacket materials are also available.

Model CEF3S16-XXX:

Power cable assembly, xxx-feet long; includes standard cable connector, stainless steel cable locking sleeve (63A-003) and heavy-duty Hubbell plug installed, on 16/3 Aquaprene SO cable. (Note: the plug and locking sleeve are not included on lengths shorter than 20 feet.)

Options

Many different lamps are available for the SOR. Please see lamp table 'A' below for details of the most popular choices.

SOR vs. SOR-II

The SOR-II is an improved version of the SOR (also called "SOR-I"). It permits lamp replacement, without tools, in less than 60 seconds –– without the removal of the light from the vehicle! It also permits lamp replacement without a full-blown disassembly of the lighting fixture, provides a weight savings of 340 grams (12 oz.), and eliminates one sealing point and seven components! Furthermore, it eliminates all internal wiring, fragile solder connections, screw loosening, and a host of maintenance problems associated with the old "socket and solder" design.
