BIRNS Connector Products transmit electric power and data underwater. They are:

BIRNS also does custom/special applications work.

  1. BIRNS Rubber Connectors are simple, low-cost cable connectors. Proven and reliable, they cannot chip or dent. They mate with each other in the "in-line" mode, and with Polymeric Series bulkhead connectors. These are ideal for light power or signal applications, or when weight and/or magnetic signature are considerations. BIRNS Rubber connectors offer:

    1. Low cost
    2. Very good corrosion resistance
    3. Light weight
    4. Minimal magnetic signature
    5. Durable neoprene material cannot chip or dent
    6. Gold plated contacts
    7. Heat-treated beryllium copper sockets

  2. BIRNS Aquamate Connectors are excellent for medium power or signal applications, or when weight or mechanical abuse are considerations. This rugged series is molded of a durable high-insulation material that cannot chip or dent, and may be mated while wet or underwater. Male and female connectors are both available in bulkhead and in-line configurations. Options include water-blocking and locking sleeves of durable plastic or heavy-duty Stainless Steel.

    1. Low cost
    2. Very good corrosion resistance
    3. Light weight
    4. Wet-mateable and/or Underwater-mateable
    5. Durable neoprene material cannot chip or dent
    6. Gold plated contacts
    7. Heat-treated BeCu sockets

  3. BIRNS Polymeric Connectors are very good mid-range connectors, comprising standard "Epoxy" and "Protected Epoxy" connectors (both molded of high-strength dielectric GRE).

BIRNS Standard Epoxy connectors are simple, low-cost bulkhead connectors for basic applications. Proven and reliable, these bulkhead connectors mate with cable connectors in the Rubber Series, and offer:

    1. Low cost
    2. Excellent corrosion resistance
    3. Light weight
    4. Minimal magnetic signature
    5. Gold plated contacts
    6. Heat-treated beryllium copper sockets

BIRNS Protected Epoxy connectors combine benefits of GRE with attributes of the Metal Shell series, and offer higher pin density than other non-metallic connectors. Bulkhead connectors' pins are protected from mechanical impact; cable connectors feature captivated coupling rings. BIRNS Protected Epoxy connectors use dual o-rings for effective sealing, withstand open-face pressure (standard), and offer:

    1. Low cost
    2. Excellent corrosion resistance
    3. Light weight
    4. Minimal magnetic signature
    5. Higher pin density than any other non-metallic connector series
    6. Gold plated contacts
    7. Heat-treated BeCu sockets

  4. BIRNS Metal Shell connectors are made for extremely heavy-duty power, signal, or electromechanical uses. They are highly damage-resistant and have redundant o-rings. BIRNS Metal Shell connectors are rated Class A, feature replaceable inserts, and offer:

    1. Extreme resistance to physical abuse
    2. Excellent performance with high power loads
    3. Class A rating
    4. 15o lead-in angle construction for o-ring longevity and reliability
    5. Replaceable inserts, with BIRNS' exclusive solder pot features
    6. Gold plated contacts
    7. Heat-treated BeCu sockets

  5. BIRNS Millennium (Miniature) miniature, high-density metal shell connectors are the most advanced connectors of their type. They're tough, built for effective sealing, adaptable-- and permit the use of 22, 20, 16, 14, and 10 AWG contacts in the same connector. They reliably transmit huge data streams while minimizing electrical noise, and are easy to use. Class A pressure rating, heat-treated BeCu sockets, gold plating, and QQ-P-35 type VI passivated AISI Type 316 bodies are standard; alternate materials are available.

    1. High contact density for maximized payload efficacy
    2. Excellent performance with extreme data signal loads
    3. Class A rating to 6 km
    4. 15o lead-in angle construction for o-ring longevity and reliability
    5. Replaceable inserts, with BIRNS' exclusive solder pot features
    6. Thick gold plating of contacts per MIL-G-45204, Type II, Class 1 (50 microns of hard gold)
    7. Heat-treated BeCu sockets

  6. BIRNS Penetrators reliably transmit electrical power or signal through a pressure boundary without compromising the boundary integrity, and offer:

    1. Minimal maintenance
    2. Excellent for long-term deployment
    3. Decreases system complexity
    4. Ideal for reduction of dependence on operator skill
    5. Pressure resistance
    6. Test options include testing per NAVMAT P-9290

  7. BIRNS M24231 Connectors are produced in accordance with USA Military Specification MIL-C-24231D(SH), which specifies various Types of underwater electrical connectors commonly known as "Portsmouth" connectors.

BIRNS also produces similar connectors not controlled by the Specification. Examples include coaxial connectors, and certain proprietary connectors designed to obviate some of the problems commonly associated with the standard M24231 and/or EB 3004 models. BIRNS also performs associated subcontract services, including cable termination, assembly, overmolding and testing. Permanent marking of individual cable assembly serialization (with full material traceability) is now available.

BIRNS also offers M24231 connectors with Cable plugs with GRE (Glass-Reinforced Epoxy) bodies, per MIL-C-24231/30(SH).
